FULL FLAVORED SINGLES
periodically, cutting edge culture will address a
noteworthy single that has been realeased.
Artist: Pitch Black
Single: It's All Real
Produced by: DJ Premier
In contrast with today's hip-hop beats, which incorporate electronic club rhythms, this month's sure shot single
features old- school production by DJ Premier. Premier's signature drum kicks and chopped-up string melodies
are both present on "I
t's All Real." This gives the song a raw vibe reminiscent of hip-hop circa mid 90's, when the
dominant producers were the likes of DJ Premier and Pete Rock.
In my opinion, Premier's production on "It's All Real' is the best he has done in years. It easily surpasses his
work done on Gangstarr's Ownerz LP, and may even rival classics, such as "
Nas is Like" or "Militia." A beat of
this caliber is certain to get heads nodding, but needs complementary lyrics to stimulate the mind. "It's All Real
doesn't disappoint in this respect, and comes fully equipped with a lyrical arsenal."
Every member of Pitch Black effortlessly compliments the raw foundation laid by Premier, and each verse differs
from the previous one. The lyrics are spit with internsity and assertiveness, with each MC attacking the beat
ferociously. This type of aggressive delivery is devoid in much of the verses laid by Pitch Black's contemporaries.
There is also a degree of thuggish intellect to be found on "
Its All Real." On a standout verse, a hungry mc
proclaims, "1970/ I was sent doin' heavenly/ spirit and I've been deadly as far back as my memory/ can recall the
power of god was sent to me/ they gon' have to mention me among the best eventually/ Pitch Black is the group of
the century/ I ain't tryin' to see death, disease, or the penitentiary." This type of lyrical content is based on lyrical
supremacy and bragging rights, but doesn't come off sounding overdone. Also, much of the "blingism" associated
with mainstream music of this nature is absent.
If
"It's All Real" is any indication of things to come from this New York based crew, their fothcoming LP may be
the best thing to happen to hip-hop in years. However, this all depends on how much work is put in by Premier,
and if the MC's remain as aggressive and hungry for props as they sound now. Although many mainstream
listeners may turn an indifferent shoulder to "
It's All Real," those who miss the spirit of early to late 90's hip-hip
will be jubilated.
