| It’s all in the name. For rapper-producer VeRs, versatility is not only his trademark, but what he stands for. “I’m the dude you ain’t heard in a minute,” he boasts. “I could flip my style. It’s not always gonna be one way.” Musically inclined the Rochester, N.Y. born, Silver Spring, Md. raised 23-year-old combined his piano skills with a love for hip-hop and has now been making beats for about a decade. By the age of eleven, his interest in the culture emerged. “It was back in the days of Cross Colours, Kris Kross, and TLC,” he says with a spark of nostalga, “I was wearing my pants backwards writing playground rhymes.” As time passed he grew along with the sound of Hip-Hop, and the field of production is where he decided to make his presence known. “I was 15 when I made my first beat.” He recalls. “I only had a computer with some sound programs and a keyboard from when I was eight years old taking piano lessons.” The formula that he created using the inferior equipment that he had has evolved into a weapon of mass destruction. Influenced by producers such as DJ Premier, Marley Marl, and Pete Rock-to name a few– he has studied a vast range of production. “I still don’t have all the things I really need for the beats,” He says. “Once we get our studio together, that’s when you will really see what I can bring to the table.” He formed his own production company, GBOS (Get Bent Outta Shape) in an effort to get his group The Sinit (Clebo, Enano, Laz, Obvious, and St.Ag) more exposure and make industry connections. “You gotta put that bent perspective,” says VeRs, known for his fondness for Bacardi. VeRs’ beats don’t fit any particular mold, as he can produce music for any hip-hop genre. “I got club joints, I got some gangsta joints,” he comments. “If they wanna have a good time, they want entertainment value, I got that.” “The things he comes up with…he doesn’t seem like the mad scientist he is. Phenomenal beats,” says Clebo. “Genius,” describes Laz. If the beats weren’t enough, VeRs’ mic skills aren’t too shabby, either. “There’s something for everybody,” he explains. “Punchlines, lyrics for lyrical cats.” He continues, “I ain’t trying to kill nobody [on wax], but I got something for people to relate to.” “The name is VeRs for a reason. And that’s V-E-R-S no E dammit!” |
